ATA estimates the tonnage of freight trucked in the US is up about 5 percent over the level of the middle of last year. It is still slightly below the peak in December 1999. They say that trucking was in a “recessionary environment” for the whole of 2001 and 2002 but this year has seen steady recovery. Trucking represents 86% of the value of all freight moved in the US and 68% of the tonnage. Shipping, pipelines, rail, and air combined constitute one-sixth of the value of freight carried on roads and about half the tonnage.
Trucks represent about 25% of toll revenues on average, far more on major truck routes like the Pennsylvania and Ohio Turnpikes, Indiana Toll Road, Chicago's tollways, and the New York State Thruway. TRnews 2003-06-27
